In the early 1980s, the Complete and Total Loser worked at a company that the newly deceased Abigail Van Buren's husband had helped run for awhile. He no longer had an office there, but his old stuff was still in a storeroom where the prying eyes of low-level workers like the Loser and a coworker could see things not meant to be seen.
Among those things were a Polaroid photo of a nude woman who, it turned out to be well-known by others at the company, was the mistress of Dear Abby's husband. The company messenger made regular trips to the woman's condominium do drop off checks for her.
This shocked the Loser at the time but he was young and was still surprised when the public face of a known figure turned out to be a facade.
When the Loser was a boy in the 60s and 70s, Dear Abby, as everyone called her then, was widely read by all and her advice was a frequent conversation topic. Later, she and other advice columnists became more of referral services for anyone with an issue than advice givers and were uninteresting to read.
