Well, it wasn't quite that, but the Complete and Total Loser had no Internet service or land line telephone from Christmas Day until just now, five days later. He got online at work and his public library, but still. You go to your mailbox, get nothing of note, then go in and see if someone emailed you (the Loser is not a smart phone user). It's like a second mailbox, and one that may have that message from someone that will make the Loser's life more bearable.
He missed that, but managed.
